Introduction to the JR Tohoku Shinkansen

The JR Tohoku Shinkansen goes straight to Koriyama and Fukushima.

At Tokyo Station or Ueno Station, look for the green signs of the JR Tohoku Shinkansen.

Buy your ticket at a JR Ticket Office, which you can recognise from the word みどりの窓口(midori no mado guchi) or from the green logo to the right.

Check the train times in advance, and for more information on JR stations (including station maps and the layout of shinkansen trains, please check here).

By Shinkansen

You can take the JR Tohoku Shinkansen straight from Tokyo Station or Ueno Station to Fukushima Station.

If you’re travelling from Ueno Station, I recommend reserving a seat in advance. This is because Shinkansen trains depart from Tokyo, not Ueno.

By Expressway Bus

There are a couple of bus services that offer an expressway bus between Tokyo and Fukushima Station.

  • Willer Bus runs a night bus (sleeper) between Shinjuku Bus Station (バスタ新宿)and Fukushima Station. They have an English-language website which you can see here.
    • Prices change depending on how far in advance you book tickets.
  • JR Bus Tohoku also runs buses between Tokyo and Fukushima Station, but unfortunately you can only book tickets at a combini or online via a website that is only written in Japanese.

By Shinkansen

You can take the JR Tohoku Shinkansen straight from Tokyo Station or Ueno Station to Koriyama Station.

By Shinkansen & Local Train

You can reach Aizu-Wakamatsu City by taking the JR Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station (or Ueno Station) to Koriyama Station. At Koriyama Station, change to the Ban’etsu West Line, and take this to Aizu-Wakamatsu Station.

By Shinkansen & Expressway Bus

Take the JR Tohoku Shinkansen to Koriyama Station. From Koriyama Station, take the Aizu Bus expressway bus all the way to Aizu-Wakamatsu Station. You don’t need to book this bus in advance.

By Direct Expressway Bus:

Aizu Bus runs an expressway bus service between Aizu-Wakamatsu Station and Shinjuku. You do need to book this bus in advance.

This bus runs once an hour / once every 2 hours, so be sure to check the departure times in advance.

Tickets are on sale from 1 month before the date of departure to 1 day before departure.

You can buy them from Aizu-Wakamatsu Bus Terminal, or the JR bus stops at Tokyo Station and Shinjuku Station.

By Limited Express Train

The JR Ltd. Express Hitachi and Tokiwa trains travel between Tokyo (Shinagawa Sta., Tokyo Sta., Ueno Sta.) and Iwaki. It’s necessary to buy a “limited express” boarding ticket (usually bought at the same time as the seat reservation is made) in order to board one of these trains. †

By Direct Expressway Bus

JR Bus Kanto runs an expressway bus between Shinjuku and Iwaki only takes 3 hours but costs nearly half the price of the limited express train. You need to reserve this bus.

Bus tickets can be reserved/bought from 1 month before the departure date up until 1 day before departing. You can buy tickets at the JR Bus Kanto desk in Tokyo Station, and at Shinjuku Bus Terminal (at the New South Exit of Shinjuku Station).

By Shinkansen & Local Train

You can reach Shirakawa Station by taking the JR Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station (or Ueno Station) to Shin-Shirakawa Station.

At Shin-Shirakawa Station, change to the JR Tohoku Line bound for Koriyama, and get off at Shirakawa Station.
