Travelling by Shinkansen

If you are a JR East South Hokkaido Pass, JR South Hokkaido Pass, or Nationwide Japan Rail Pass holder, train is definitely your best mode of transport for covering the distance between Hokkaido and Fukushima Prefecture.

Take the Limited Express Super Hokuto Train from Sapporo Station to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station. This train takes around 3.5 hours.

At Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station, switch to the JR Tohoku-Hokkaido Shinkansen train heading for Sendai. This train takes just 2.5 hours to reach Sendai Station.

The train switches from being the Hokkaido Shinkansen to the Tohoku Shinkansen at Shin-Aomori Station in Aomori Prefecture, but you don’t usually have to get off the train.

At Sendai Station, switch to a JR Tohoku Shinkansen heading bound for Tokyo, and get off at Fukushima Station or Koriyama Station, depending on where you’re headed too. (See here for more on getting from Sendai Station to stations in Fukushima Prefecture)

Without the JR Pass, this one way journey would cost you around 25,000 yen.

Travelling by Plane

If you don’t have the JR Rail Pass and wish to shave a few hours off your travel time from Hokkaido, it might be worth considering flying from Sapporo’s New Chitose Airport.

You can fly to Sendai Airport or Fukushima Airport from New Chitose Airport. If you’re going to Koriyama area, it might be worth flying into Fukushima Airport and taking the airport bus to Koriyama.

Please note, only one flight a day leaves Hokkaido for Fukushima Airport (and vice-versa), so it might make more sense to fly to Sendai if the times don’t match.

If you’re heading to Fukushima City or Shirakawa City, it makes more sense to fly to Sendai Airport and take the shinkansen down from Sendai Station to the appropriate station. (See here for information on reaching various places in Fukushima from Sendai Airport).
