By Local Train:

For a cheaper alternative to the Shinkansen, you can take the JR Tohoku Line directly to Fukushima Station. This train takes 1 hour 20 minutes and costs ¥1,320 each way.

By Expressway Bus:

  • Fukushima Transportation runs an expressway bus between Fukushima Station and Sendai Station.
  • Buses tend to run every 20-30 minutes between the hours of 6:30am and 20:00.
  • You don’t need to reserve the bus, and pay in cash when you get off the bus.

You can take the JR Tohoku Shinkansen from Sendai to Koriyama Station. This takes around 40 minutes and costs around ¥4860.

By Local Train

Take the JR Tohoku Line bound for Fukushima from Sendai Station to Fukushima. Change at Fukushima Station onto the JR Tohoku Line bound for Shin-Shirakawa. Taking these local trains takes around 2.5 hours.

* If you’re travelling from Koriyama to Sendai, take the JR Tohoku Line train bound for Fukushima as far as Fukushima Station, then change onto the JR Tohoku Line bound for Sendai.

  • Expressway Bus service runs between Koriyama and Sendai via Nihonmatsu Bus Stop. The bus costs 2300 yen per way and takes around 2 hours.

You can reach Aizu-Wakamatsu City by taking the JR Tohoku Shinkansen from Sendai Station to Koriyama Station. At Koriyama Station, change to the Ban’etsu West Line, and take this to Aizu-Wakamatsu Station.

  • Aizu Bus runs an expressway bus service between Aizu-Wakamatsu Station and Sendai Station.
  • You don’t need to book this bus in advance. This bus doesn’t take much longer than travelling by train, and is quite a bit cheaper.
  • This bus runs once an hour / once every 2 hours, so be sure to check the departure times in advance.

Shin-Joban Kotsu, together with JR Bus Tohoku, runs an expressway bus service between Sendai and Iwaki.

  • The bus takes 3 hours 10 minutes, but costs less than half of what it would cost to do this journey by train / shinkansen.
  • You need to book this bus in advance.
  • You can buy tickets in advance at Iwaki Station Information Desk and Sendai Station East Exit Bus Station.
  • There are 7 buses a day, so please check the bus timetable in advance.
